If you’re anything like us, you’ll have tons of old books lying around the house. Don’t let them go to waste!
There are loads of upcycling practices which can help your well-read books discover a new purpose in life. We’ve collected some of our favourites (all with handy tutorials, too), but there’s still loads of ideas out there to discover. Leave your thoughts and ideas in the comments below!
1. Zipper Clutch Bags
Want to demonstrate your love for books in an effortlessly stylish fashion? See Kate Sew has come up with a nifty way of turning your old hardback book into a zipper clutch bag.
2. Invisible Shelves
Completely finished with a book (or have a spare copy lying around)? You can turn it into a floating shelf for all your other books to sit upon! You’ll need an L-bracket and some DIY know-how, but the finished effect is very impressive.
3. Hollow Book Box
Hollowing out a book and using it as a secret box is one of the oldest tricks in the book (pun very much intended). Nowadays, there’s loads for sale online, but it’s fairly easy to turn an old hardback into a box. Just hollow out the inside neatly, and store your personal goods inside!
4. Phone Charging Dock
Want a modern use for your well worn books? With some careful preparation, you can turn your old favourites into a stylish charging dock. It requires some precise cutting, but once you’ve got it all sorted, you’ll have a completely unique charging dock!
If you love growing flowers and tending your garden, why not bring some of those horticultural delights inside? Like the phone charging dock, creating a book planter takes some precise knife work, but the results are amazing.
6. Spine Bookmarks
Turning your old books into bookmarks for your new books is a highly practical upcycling practice. Carefully remove the spine from your chosen classic, and voila! If you want to be extra fancy, you can attach a ribbon or tassel, after punching a hole in the bookmark. Enjoy!
